When you compare modern furniture solutions to traditional reproduction furniture, the sheer difference in terms of quality is clear not just from the point of view of construction, but the attention to the overall visual style as well. Older styles seemed to ooze character and elegance, with the skill of the furniture designer as much an art as a craft.
These days furniture solutions seem to centre more around keeping manufacturing costs low, transportation costs cheap and maximising the convenience factor at every step. Certainly I'll admit that flatpack furniture has its uses, and in offices or some homes can prove to be affordable, convenient solutions. But then takeout is convenient - yet it doesn't mean that it's good to live on it and accept it's all there is.
I moved house recently - not the most wonderful of experiences, but fortunately on this occasion I had decided that this new home would be my base for a good many years to come. The property was not one of these new flatpack homes which seem to come out of a box and be erected within three days by a couple of labourers in between coffee breaks.
The property I moved in to was a classic Victorian terrace, with many of the original features such as the ornate mantelpiece, wooden flooring, high ceilings and tall windows which let in so much light. However, it was clear from the start that a property with such character and style would certainly not be the place to house furniture which comes in a box three inches high and which is held together by half a dozen screws and a bit of folded paper under one leg to stop it wobbling.
I decided that what was needed was to introduce some well crafted, good solid traditional reproduction furniture which would bring into the property the character, style and elegance which would complement its architectural style. Flatpack furniture in a Victorian property is a little like pouring tomato ketchup on your caviar torte. There was only one problem with my plan - I didn't have any furniture of that kind.
The first step I took was to take a trip down to a few local auction rooms. These were certainly fascinating, and I managed to gather one or two nice pieces such as an occasional table set and a few nice paintings. But the main problem was that all I could do using this method was to collect items of furniture which were near misses, rather than purposely designed suites of furniture with a consistent theme.
I'm a great fan of buying online, from books to DVDs, but until recently the idea hadn't even occurred to me of buying furniture online. However, I spent some time looking for traditional reproduction furniture websites. For a fair time I was somewhat disappointed, since many seemed to be run by traders who had no direct influence on the stock or the designs, and in many instances it was impossible to fully furnish even one room with items of furniture which matched in style.
It is fortunate that I didn't give up too quickly though, because I came across a family run business that's been around for over a hundred years - considerably longer than any website! Newby House Interiors have a huge selection of really first rate traditional reproduction furniture items for dining rooms, kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms. With truly elegant pieces such as bookcases, dining tables and lamp tables, their selection is ideal for anyone looking to furnish a period property or any home which has more character than a flatpack desk.
