When you first move into a new place, especially if it's the first place you can call your very own, one thing that may escape your mind when trying to think of what you'll need is window shades. Typically when you get your very first place, you're on a shoestring budget, understandably. One inexpensive way to cover your windows and get the privacy that you deserve is to buy roller shades. These shades have been around as long as time can tell and though they aren't beautiful, they aren't all together ugly.
Roller shades are functional, they serve a purpose. If you're looking for aesthetics, you can buy curtains to cover your windows. Even if you do buy curtains, having roller shades is still a really good idea. They serve many purposes and can be used in any climate in the country and still be beneficial. The first thing that they do is keep visibility down. No one likes thinking that people could be watching every step they take while they're inside of their own home.
Roller shades are easy to find. They come in all sorts of patterns as well as plain colors. There are many different dimensions that windows and window coverings come in so you should always measure first. There's nothing worse than having a roller shade that is too small for your window. Even if you end up with one that is a little too large, it can be hung above the window and it will cover adequately and then some.
Speaking of hanging your window shades, you can install them in two different places. As I stated above, you can mount them on the outside of the window, in essence, covering the entire window opening. They should be hung just above the window frame at the top. You can also mount them inside of the window frame. Just make sure you don't get blinds that are too large or you'll have to mount them the other way.
If you choose to mount them inside of the window frame, make certain that you have them evenly placed or you'll have a real disaster on your hands! You can always get a roller shade that is too long for you window but make sure that you never end up with one that is too short.
When mounting your roller shades, ensure that you are not fixing them to drywall only. This will end up pulling the nails or screws out of the wall and the shade will fall down. Roller shades get a lot of use and the motion of pulling them up and down can cause issues if you haven't installed them in solid walls.
The other way to hang shades would be to hang them just above the window, just to the outside of the window frame. This will ensure that the entire window is covered although it may be more likely to blow if you have a drafty space or use ceiling fans. Always make sure to safely fasten any window covering that you install to the walls firmly. Roller shades do a lot of pulling and tugging on the brackets that they are installed with so make sure they are in a solid piece of wall, not just drywall.
If you're looking to dress up your roller shades a little bit but don't have money for curtains quite yet, you can always get an inexpensive valance at a local dollar store until you can buy a full curtain set.
