Borderline: An abnormal thriller comedy in which L.A. cop Trevor tries to assemble proof contrary to cunning drug smuggler Burr when mixing with hard gentleman MacMurray in Mexico. Starts out promisingly, although eventually slows down in silliness. Burr makes a lucid scoundrel. Cast includes Fred MacMurray, Claire Trevor, Raymond Burr, Jose Torvay, Morris Ankrum, and Roy Roberts. (88 minutes,'50)
The King and I: Phenomenal film adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical, based on the novel filmed in'46 as Anna and the Baron of Siam (and redid as Anna and the Emperor). Kerr plays the widowed English school teacher who voyages to Siam to instruct the Baron's numerous kids, and finds handling His Highness her best test. Brynner gives the acting job of a generation, and was rewarded with an Oscar reconstructing his Broadway role. Kerr is charming and her harmonizing voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon. Melodies contain "Hello, Young Lovers," "Getting to Know You," and "Shall We Dance." Cast includes Deborah Kerr, Yul Brynner, Rita Moreno, Martin Benson, Terry Saunders, Rex Thompson, and Alan Mowbray. (133 minutes,'56)
Blaze of Noon: A hokey tale of Holden torn between his spouse (Baxter) and his real love, flying. Cast includes Anne Baxter, William Holden, Sonny Tufts, William Bendix, and Sterling Hayden. (91 minutes,'87)
Trade: A thirteen-year-old gal is kidnapped by members of a sex-trafficking ring. As her older brother follows her tracks, he hooks up with a Texas cop (Kline) who has his own rationales for chasing this outfit of bad guys. This downbeat drama reveals a stunning, debasing circumstance, although it's maddeningly choppy, one second daring and commanding (particularly with Finnish actress Bachleda) and the next remarkably corny. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Alicia Bachleda, Paulina Gaitan, Kathleen Gati, Pasha D. Lychnikoff, Anthony Crivello, Linda Emond, Zack Ward, Cesar Ramos, Marco Perez, and Tim Reid. (120 minutes, 2007)
Sudden Death: The sarcastic master mind Boothe keeps the Vice President captive in a secluded box throughout Stanley Cup hockey playoffs in Pittsburgh, requesting a few billion dollars, or he'll blow up the entire stadium. However fire inspector Van Damme is on the job and Boothe has foolishly seized our idol's baby girl. Cast includes Jean-Claude Van Damme, Powers Boothe, Raymond J. Barry, Whittni Wright, Ross Malinger, Dorian Harewood, and Paul Mochnick. (110 minutes,'95)
The Believer: A brutal evaluation of a yeshiva informed youthful guy in N.Y.C. who opts to become a neo-Nazi skinhead. Gosling gives a stellar performance as a Jew (loosely based on truth) whose rationale is controversial however whose desire is genuine. R. Cast includes Ryan Gosling, Summer Phoenix, Billy Zane, Theresa Russell, Glenn Fitzgerald, Ronald Guttman, and Henry Bean. (98 minutes, 2002)
Dragonfly: An ER doctor, mourning for his lifeless spouse, acquires a succession of signals from her containing messages from other people who've had near-death experiences. What do they mean' More drawn out than it needs to be, although a captivating and abnormal tale of one guy's metaphysical odyssey. Cast includes Kevin Costner, Kathy Bates, Joe Morton, Ron Rifkin, Linda Seek, Susanna Thompson, Jacob Vargas, Jay Thomas, and Matt Craven. (103 minutes, 2002)
Belle de Jour: Bunuel's wry and upsetting story of a virginal newlywed who works the night switch in a high-style Parisian brothel, unbeknownst to her spouse. Bunuel's recipe of stunning topic belies the acute humor of his script (co-written with Jean Claude Catriere). Cast includes Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, Michel Piccoli, Genevieve Page, Francisco Rabal, and Pierre Clementi. (100 minutes,'67)
Rhapsody in August: Average (by his own estimations) little Kurosawa is a piece in reference to the hurtful memories of a Japanese woman who recollects the bombing of Nagasaki at the end of WW2. Gere, in a hyped up cameo, doesn't appear too out of place as a Japanese American member of the old lady's lengthened family. Cast includes Sachiko Murase, Richard Gere, and Narumi Kayashima. (98 minutes,'91)
